Rungu Massage

I am excited to tell you about a new massage available from Essentiaroma. The Rungu Massage.

A Rungu (Swahili) is a wooden throwing club or baton bearing special cultural importance in certain East African tribes. It is especially associated with Masai morans (male warriors) who have traditionally used it in warfare and for hunting as a throwing club. It is also a popular souvenir among tourists.

In a Rungu massage, the Rungu is used to perform the massage with. Rungu massage is a long stroked, deep pressure massage that reduces pains and aches, improves blood circulation, lymph drainage and muscle toning and provides immediate relaxation. The shaft can be used in long stroking movements, while the balls can be used to target specific areas for instance, muscle spasms. This massage is excellent for sore, stiff or aching muscles, but it also improves your sensory nerve perception and blood circulation. It increases drainage in the lymphatic system, and contribute to a release of endorphins, promoting a deeply relaxed feeling.

At Essentiaroma, I don’t only use the Rungu sticks shown above, I also use smaller ones I had custom made. This will ensure a pleasurable experience all over!

Although the pressure is easily adjusted making the massage suitable for all, it is highly recommended for those who love hard pressure massage as the dynamics of the sticks make this very easy for the therapist to achieve.

Beard Oil

Beard care products became very trendy over the last couple of years. Now if you missed a previous blog about the toxicity of perfume, read it HERE before you carry on, as the same scenario applies to men’s fragrance products.

I have been using essential oils as perfume for a long time, so for my husband to make the transition from aftershave and men’s cologne to essential oils, was just natural. We played around with some blends, but the one that hit home for both of us in terms of smell, was quite a surprise!

Holiday Joy is only available during the festive season. This blend of Wild Orange, Cinnamon, Nutmeg, and Clove combined with the fresh and airy scent of Siberian and Douglas Fir, yields an essential oil blend that quickly became a dōTERRA Christmas tradition. Homes all over the world are fragranced with this fantastic blend to bring the joy of Christmas.

But man. Does this smell good on my husband’s beard! I kid you not! He gets way more kisses and cuddles with this on this face! The smell is spicy, warm, sweet and fresh.

But wait…. there’s more!

My husband never wore a beard, as he had a patchy beard with quite a few bare spots. When the Covid lockdown started and he was working from home, he took a break from shaving. And great was our surprise when we realised all the bare spots were gone! He grew a full beard. A beard that was soft, well groomed, with no bare spots. How amazing is that!

I am honest if I tell you that I have no idea which oil or combination of oils in this blend, deserves the credit here. I am just so happy about all of this. My husband no longer applies chemicals to his face, he smells divine and he has a beard many a man will be jealous of! Now he plays with his different beard styles. This weekend, he shaved the sides off. I so enjoy seeing him this happy about his beard.

If you thought essential oils are only for the women, think again.

To make yours: use olive oil as a base and add 2 drops of Holiday Joy for each ml of olive oil. Enjoy!

Lip Balm DIY

Who doesn’t love a nice lip balm?! I am very dependent on mine.

A couple of years ago I read an article about the amount of lip balm and lipstick a woman swallows in a life time. It scared the daylights out of me! I don’t know what are in those products, so I really don’t want to ingest them. Oh yeah sure, ‘they’ claim it is safe, but how many times have we been using things that were portrayed as healthy and safe, only to find eventually that they were the exact opposite? Think food for example. For years we have been told to eat margarine rather than butter for health reasons. And now? We are all going back to butter after we found out what is really in margarine. Call me suspicious (I really am), but I want to know exactly what I put in or on my body, and I want to know that it is safe.

So I started making my own lip balm. I have been using this for about 15 years now and I am not planning to change back to store bought ever!

So let’s jump right in!

  • Olive Oil.
  • Raw Beeswax (refined isn’t as good).
  • Essential Oil of choice – this time I used Spearmint.

Melt the beeswax in a double boiler, or place it in a glass jar, in a large pot and bring to the boil. When melted, carefully remove the hot bottle.

Measure out your beeswax to olive oil in a 1:2 ratio. For example, 10ml beeswax to 20ml olive oil. Beeswax sets extremely fast – warm up your measuring spoon before measuring otherwise it will set on the cold spoon.

Add both ingredients to a container from which you can easily pour; a small milk jar works well (warm the milk jar before you add the ingredients). For each ml of base you have, add one drop of essential oil. For my 30 ml, I thus added 30 drops of Spearmint oil. Pour into empty lip balm tubes, or small containers. I use small jam jars and the 30 ml base is exactly enough to fill one jar.

Leave to set and enjoy!

You don’t have to use Spearmint. Any oil that comes from an edible plant can be used. Experiment with different essential oils. Here are some oils and combinations you can try (experiment with others too).

  • Lavender and Chamomile
  • Peppermint and Spearmint
  • Wild Orange

Let me know what you put in yours and how it smells!

Into the forest…

I love nature, forests especially. Where I live, there are no forests. Bushveld yes, but it isn’t the same. I long for those long walks underneath old and tall trees, the soft leaves becoming compost under my feet, and the sweet smell of nature in my nostrils. Alas, in modern times, such experiences are luxury to say the least.

Whenever I look for nature photos to use on my desktop, I always end up looking at photos of forests. There is something there ever calling me. I wish I could answer to that call. I long for morning walks in a misty forest.

The closest I can get to a forest today, is with my diffuser next to me!

I have a friend in the northern hemisphere who experimented with different diffuser blends, until she found what smelled to her like Christmas trees, but without the real tree messing in her lounge. When she gave me this recipe, I simply had to try it. And my goodness, if I close my eyes, I am transported into a deep forest somewhere, where all you hear and smell, is nature.

Start your diffuser. Come away with me….. to the forest….

Diffuser Blend: 2 drops Black Spruce, 2 drops Cedarwood, 2 drops Siberian Fir

Black Spruce is a grounding oil. It helps you to deal with difficult emotional blocks. Cedarwood also aids in calming the mind and the senses. Siberian Fir is grounding and empowering. It aids the body in relaxation while stimulating the mind.

This blend is wonderful to take a imaginary trip into a deep and mysterious forest, but it is a powerful assistant when you need to stay calm, grounded and keep your emotions in tact. Give it a try.

Now excuse me, my forest is calling…

Let me WHISPER to you… your perfume is a secret poison…

I remember my first bottle of perfume as if it was yesterday. I was a young girl and my mother bought me a beautiful blue bottle of perfume. Blue Grass was the name. It made me feel all grown up!

Unfortunately, perfume today isn’t the same as it was. When regulations on products started, the perfumers were acquitted of having to list all the ingredients on the label; they claimed that it would give away their recipes. They were allowed to only list ‘fragrance’. That could be anything. In the beginning al was fine as the ‘fragrance’ was a mixture of plant oils. In our day and age however, ‘fragrance’ is a dangerous, uncontrolled cocktail of chemicals, many of them dangerous to your health.

Your skin is your biggest organ. Your skin will absorb whatever is next to it. You can test this for yourself. Take a clove of garlic and cut it in half. Use the cut side and rub it around on the sole of your foot. Within about 20 minutes, you will taste garlic in your mouth.

So what is really in perfume? More than 95% of the so called ‘fragrance’ consist of petrochemicals such as benzene derivatives, aldehydes, phthalates, and a slew of other known toxins. Suddenly it doesn’t sound that nice anymore does it? Many of these ingredients have an adverse effect on hormone production, and they are often carcinogenic as well. And then we wonder why sickness and disease are increasing at such a staggering rate.

Fortunately, we have an alternative. Actually, we have many! But today, I want to focus on WHISPER.

doTerra Whisper Blend for Women is a complex and diverse blend of essential oils, offering a distinct scent that differs from person to person. If I apply it on my body, it smells warm, woody and spicy. On my sister in law, it smells sweet and floral. Just like other perfumes, it reacts with your body to create your unique fragrance. And this time we are referring to a natural fragrance without any side effects.

Whisper is a blend of the most precious flowers in the industry. Jasmin, Ylang-Ylang, Patchouli, Vanilla, Cinnamon and Cocoa comes together perfectly to create a harmonious scent that the most expensive perfume cannot match.

You are probably wondering how long such a small bottle will last you. Well, depending on viscosity, essential oils are between 20 and 30 drops per milliliter. Let’s take the worst case scenario. If there are only 20 drops in a milliliter, you have 100 drops in that little bottle. That is enough for 100 days. That’s right! You only need one drop. Place one drop on your wrist, quickly rub the other wrist against it, and press both wrists against your neck. That is it. One drop for the entire day. You might not smell it after the first hour, but those around you will smell it. And it smells divine!

Here are a list of articles you can read on this topic. Trust me, it’s worth your time. Read them. If you want to make a better choice in perfume, let me know! I will help you.

Petroleum Jelly DIY

Petroleum jelly or petrolatum has been a household name for as long as I can remember. This mixture of mineral oils and waxes was discovered in 1859 by Robert Augustus Chesebroug who saw the oil workers treat their burns with the gooey jelly found on the oil rigs. It is a by product of the oil industry which means it isn’t derived from a sustainable source, in other words, the manufacture thereof is not environment friendly.

The jelly is generally regarded as safe as it is refined to remove all carcinogenic substances. Unfortunately, for the average consumer, there is no way to check and see whether this is really the case. If you want to use it, you have to trust the company that sells it. Unfortunately over the last few decades, many a product that was claimed to be safe, has turned out to be the exact opposite. The original petroleum jelly, Vaseline, claims to be highly-refined, triple-purified and non-carcinogenic and non-comedogenic.

Petroleum jelly is often used to moisturize the skin. It actually has no moisturizing properties of its own, and it isn’t absorbed into the skin. It forms a barrier over the skin which seals in the body’s own moisture. This is however not the best choice as it causes a drying of the pores due to a lack of air and moisture from external sources. It also seals in any surface dirt on the skin, causing blackheads. People suffering from any skin condition, for example acne or rosacea, should avoid petroleum jelly altogether.

Luckily for us, we have some natural, DIY options.

For the base we are going to use raw beeswax and olive oil. Beeswax has anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties; it will encourage healing of any wounds. It also forms a protective barrier between the skin and the surrounding environment, but it does so without clogging the pores. Too add to the wonder, beeswax is high in vitamin A, which means that cell reconstruction is supported. This is why beeswax is a common ingredient in skin care products. Olive oil is equally impressive. The application of olive oil on the skin can block about 20% of harmful UV rays by boosting the skin’s natural sun-blocking proteins. It also contains a fat called squalene which is the skin’s most important protective fat. Olive oil moisturizes dry skin and it protects against premature ageing. All of this sounds so much better than applying a by-product of the oil industry to your skin!

  • Raw beeswax (you can buy these from Isivuno)
  • Cold extracted olive oil

Melt the beeswax in a double boiler. You can also add the beeswax to a glass jar and place that in a pot with cold water. Place on the stove and bring to the boil. Leave it boiling until the beeswax have melted.

Combine one part beeswax and four parts olive oil in a glass jar. Measure in volume, in other words, milliliters or fluid ounces. If for instance you measure out 10ml of melted beeswax, 10ml is your one part. You would then need to add 40ml of olive oil which is equal to four parts.

Add 1 drop of essential oil for every ml of the wax and oil mixture. Using the previous example of 10ml beeswax and 40ml olive oil, you will need 50 drops of oil (1 drop for each ml).

Leave to cool down to room temperature.

The raw beeswax are roughly chopped and added to a glass mason jar. This is placed in a pot of water and left to boil for a while so that the beeswax can melt.
Melted beeswax and cold extracted olive oil.
Depending on the temperature of the day, you might need to reheat to ensure proper mixing, once everything has been added to the container. The beeswax sets extremely fast and is very sensitive to the addition of a cold oil. In this photo you can see how it solidifies when the cold essential oils are added. Just pop the small jar back into the same pot for a couple of minutes until fully melted down again. Give it a good shake and leave to set.

Essential Oil Suggestions

To make a powerful HEEL BALM, add equal drops of the following oils:

  • Tea Tree
  • Peppermint
  • Eucalyptus
  • Rosemary

This minty balm will not only keep your heels soft, it is a wonderful foot treatment at the end of a long day.

To make a soothing BUM CREAM, add equal drops of the following oils:

  • Tea Tree
  • Lavender

For a nice CUTICLE CREAM that will stimulate nail growth too, add equal drops of the following oils:

  • Frankincense
  • Citrus Bliss

When you stick your finger in, it feels stiff, but once you start spreading it, it feels the same as petroleum jelly, just so much more healthy!
Today in my kitchen, it was time for a nice minty heal balm! It feels so good to rub this into my feet. No side effects. No chemicals. Just tender love and care as nature provides it.

Choose natural. Choose products without possible side effects.

Healthier Choices

Being brutally honest, there are many aspects of our lives for which we don’t really have a choice, as horrid as that may sound. If you want to succeed in a business today, you have to engage on social media. No choice there. If you want to have a cell phone, you have to accept that a big brother somewhere will gather information on you, whether you gave consent or not. Many aspects of our health are legalized and we don’t have much say in the matter. This list can go on for a long time, but there are some good news. In certain aspects, you DO have a choice! And you have to choose wisely.

The phrase low tox living is fast becoming the new buzz, with good reason. Right across the world there is a growing awareness of the effects our modern lifestyle has on the environment. Many people are re-evaluating their lifestyle choices and consciously seek out the healthier options, not just for them but for the environment too. At the end of the day, each one of us has a responsibility. We might not be able to change the air pollution in the entire world, but we can choose how we contribute to it. Often times the global state is so overwhelming that we just want to give it up for a bad job, but that is exactly what we shouldn’t do! The more people make better choices, the better our future and the future of our planet becomes.

I have chosen to use natural remedies if at all possible, rather than allopathic medication.

I have chosen to replace my beauty products with natural DIY products that doesn’t contain harmful chemical substances.

I have chosen to replace the cleaning products in my house with natural DIY products that do not contribute the pollution in any form whatsoever.

What will you choose?

If you haven’t done so already, please consider subscribing to my blog. I will regularly share recipes and ideas to contribute to your low tox living.
