Rungu Massage

I am excited to tell you about a new massage available from Essentiaroma. The Rungu Massage.

A Rungu (Swahili) is a wooden throwing club or baton bearing special cultural importance in certain East African tribes. It is especially associated with Masai morans (male warriors) who have traditionally used it in warfare and for hunting as a throwing club. It is also a popular souvenir among tourists.

In a Rungu massage, the Rungu is used to perform the massage with. Rungu massage is a long stroked, deep pressure massage that reduces pains and aches, improves blood circulation, lymph drainage and muscle toning and provides immediate relaxation. The shaft can be used in long stroking movements, while the balls can be used to target specific areas for instance, muscle spasms. This massage is excellent for sore, stiff or aching muscles, but it also improves your sensory nerve perception and blood circulation. It increases drainage in the lymphatic system, and contribute to a release of endorphins, promoting a deeply relaxed feeling.

Let me whisper to you… your perfume is a secret poison…

I remember my first bottle of perfume as if it was yesterday. I was a young girl and my mother bought me a beautiful blue bottle of perfume. Blue Grass was the name. It made me feel all grown up!

Unfortunately, perfume today isn’t the same as it was. When regulations on products started, the perfumers were acquitted of having to list all the ingredients on the label; they claimed that it would give away their recipes. They were allowed to only list ‘fragrance’. That could be anything. In the beginning al was fine as the ‘fragrance’ was a mixture of plant oils. In our day and age however, ‘fragrance’ is a dangerous, uncontrolled cocktail of chemicals, many of them dangerous to your health.

Your skin is your biggest organ. Your skin will absorb whatever is next to it. You can test this for yourself. Take a clove of garlic and cut it in half. Use the cut side and rub it around on the sole of your foot. Within about 20 minutes, you will taste garlic in your mouth.

So what is really in perfume? More than 95% of the so called ‘fragrance’ consist of petrochemicals such as benzene derivatives, aldehydes, phthalates, and a slew of other known toxins. Suddenly it doesn’t sound that nice anymore does it? Many of these ingredients have an adverse effect on hormone production, and they are often carcinogenic as well. And then we wonder why sickness and disease are increasing at such a staggering rate.

Fortunately, we have an alternative. Actually, we have many!

You can make your oil perfume with a few basic ingredients and some essential oil. You will need the following:

  • Olive Oil
  • Wheatgerm Oil to act as preservative
  • Some essential oils

A roller ball bottle is perfect for this job. Add 10-15 drops of essential oils of your choice to the bottle. Top it up with olive oil and wheatgerm oil in equal amounts.

Here are some combinations you could try:

For a light citrus perfume:

  • Grapefruit
  • Sweet Orange
  • Mandarin
  • Petitgrain
  • Neroli

For a floral perfume:

  • Lavender
  • Jasmine
  • Rose
  • Neroli
  • Ylang-Ylang

Petroleum Jelly DIY

Petroleum jelly or petrolatum has been a household name for as long as I can remember. This mixture of mineral oils and waxes was discovered in 1859 by Robert Augustus Chesebroug who saw the oil workers treat their burns with the gooey jelly found on the oil rigs. It is a by product of the oil industry which means it isn’t derived from a sustainable source, in other words, the manufacture thereof is not environment friendly.

The jelly is generally regarded as safe as it is refined to remove all carcinogenic substances. Unfortunately, for the average consumer, there is no way to check and see whether this is really the case. If you want to use it, you have to trust the company that sells it. Unfortunately over the last few decades, many a product that was claimed to be safe, has turned out to be the exact opposite. The original petroleum jelly, Vaseline, claims to be highly-refined, triple-purified and non-carcinogenic and non-comedogenic.

Petroleum jelly is often used to moisturize the skin. It actually has no moisturizing properties of its own, and it isn’t absorbed into the skin. It forms a barrier over the skin which seals in the body’s own moisture. This is however not the best choice as it causes a drying of the pores due to a lack of air and moisture from external sources. It also seals in any surface dirt on the skin, causing blackheads. People suffering from any skin condition, for example acne or rosacea, should avoid petroleum jelly altogether.

Luckily for us, we have some natural, DIY options.

For the base we are going to use raw beeswax and olive oil. Beeswax has anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties; it will encourage healing of any wounds. It also forms a protective barrier between the skin and the surrounding environment, but it does so without clogging the pores. Too add to the wonder, beeswax is high in vitamin A, which means that cell reconstruction is supported. This is why beeswax is a common ingredient in skin care products. Olive oil is equally impressive. The application of olive oil on the skin can block about 20% of harmful UV rays by boosting the skin’s natural sun-blocking proteins. It also contains a fat called squalene which is the skin’s most important protective fat. Olive oil moisturizes dry skin and it protects against premature ageing. All of this sounds so much better than applying a by-product of the oil industry to your skin!


  • Raw beeswax (you can buy these from Isivuno)
  • Cold extracted olive oil


Melt the beeswax in a double boiler. You can also add the beeswax to a glass jar and place that in a pot with cold water. Place on the stove and bring to the boil. Leave it boiling until the beeswax have melted.

Combine one part beeswax and four parts olive oil in a glass jar. Measure in volume, in other words, milliliters or fluid ounces. If for instance you measure out 10ml of melted beeswax, 10ml is your one part. You would then need to add 40ml of olive oil which is equal to four parts.

Add 1 drop of essential oil for every ml of the wax and oil mixture. Using the previous example of 10ml beeswax and 40ml olive oil, you will need 50 drops of oil (1 drop for each ml).

Leave to cool down to room temperature.

The raw beeswax are roughly chopped and added to a glass mason jar. This is placed in a pot of water and left to boil for a while so that the beeswax can melt.

Depending on the temperature of the day, you might need to reheat to ensure proper mixing, once everything has been added to the container. The beeswax sets extremely fast and is very sensitive to the addition of a cold oil. In this photo you can see how it solidifies when the cold essential oils are added. Just pop the small jar back into the same pot for a couple of minutes until fully melted down again. Give it a good shake and leave to set.

Essential Oil Suggestions

To make a powerful HEEL BALM, add equal drops of the following oils:

  • Tea Tree
  • Peppermint
  • Eucalyptus

This minty balm will not only keep your heels soft, it is a wonderful foot treatment at the end of a long day.

To make a soothing BUM CREAM, add equal drops of the following oils:

  • Tea Tree
  • Lavender

For a nice CUTICLE CREAM that will stimulate nail growth too, add equal drops of the following oils:

  • Frankincense
  • Grapefruit
  • Lemon

When you stick your finger in, it feels stiff, but once you start spreading it, it feels the same as petroleum jelly, just so much more healthy!

Healthier Choices

Being brutally honest, there are many aspects of our lives for which we don’t really have a choice, as horrid as that may sound. If you want to succeed in a business today, you have to engage on social media. No choice there. If you want to have a cell phone, you have to accept that a big brother somewhere will gather information on you, whether you gave consent or not. Many aspects of our health are legalized and we don’t have much say in the matter. This list can go on for a long time, but there are some good news. In certain aspects, you DO have a choice! And you have to choose wisely.

The phrase low tox living is fast becoming the new buzz, with good reason. Right across the world there is a growing awareness of the effects our modern lifestyle has on the environment. Many people are re-evaluating their lifestyle choices and consciously seek out the healthier options, not just for them but for the environment too. At the end of the day, each one of us has a responsibility. We might not be able to change the air pollution in the entire world, but we can choose how we contribute to it. Often times the global state is so overwhelming that we just want to give it up for a bad job, but that is exactly what we shouldn’t do! The more people make better choices, the better our future and the future of our planet becomes.
